Sam is an eleven year old boy who suffers from a life filled with bizarre accidents. Paint explodes, shoelaces untie themselves, and his clothes attract random stains.
In the near future, every human has The Treatment when they’re born. The Treatment
adds nanites (microscopic machines) to everyone’s bloodstreams to keep them healthy so they can live forever, and
gives everyone an artificial intelligence chip that allows people to taste ice cream when they’re eating broccoli, automatically know the spelling of any word, or completely immerse themselves in video games.
After a bus-on-bus accident in which Sam teleports to the curb and the other bus mysteriously slides through Sam’s without the two ever touching, Sam meets a man named Bender. He tells Sam about nano-mancy, the ability to control nanites outside his body, not just the ones within. Sam’s life suddenly makes sense.
